WHAT IF YOU FIND A STRAY OR ABANDONED ANIMAL?
1.  Be sure it actually is stray or abandoned.  Many pets roam far from home to hunt or to socialize with others, especially if they are not altered.

2. If you find an 'abandoned' litter of kittens or puppies, observe before you interfere.  The mother may be moving them to a different location, and your presence has scared her off.   Young animals need their mothers, and your interference, although well-intended, may cause many problems.

3. Call your local law enforcement, tell them there is a stray animal on your property.  If they refuse to come collect the animal, call your city or county government officials.  We do not have animal control in Waverly Iowa.  It is up to law enforcement to collect stray animals.

4.  We can not accept wildlife or injured animals.  WE DO NOT HAVE A VETERINARIAN ON STAFF. You become responsible for those you rescue.  If the animal needs medical attention, please take it to your veterinarian.  Call the Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation Project in Waterloo at 319-277-6511 with questions about wildlife.

What do I do if I've found a baby bird?

5.  Always remember, if your animal had gotten out, would you want it back or would you want some well-intentioned person to just keep it?  All free-roaming animals should be reported to your local animal control office (might be your local police or sheriff) and if you can help by confining (kennel, crate, tie out, etc) or trapping the animal so it can be easily picked up, that's fantastic!  If you have any concerns about the animal, leave it alone!  Do not endanger yourself or your family to save a stray animal.

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO SURRENDER YOUR ANIMAL?

1.  You must call us first.  We may or may not have space available to take your animal.  (319)269-3722  You cannot just come drop an animal with us.  You cannot just tie a dog to our doorstep (the police will take the dog into animal control and I cannot guarantee where your dog will end up)

2.  If we are able to accept your pet, there are papers to sign.  Bring your pet's vet records (most vets will print them out for you) and anything else that you no longer need (crate, bed, toys, bowls, leash, collar, food, etc).  We don't charge you to bring your pet to us, but we do request a donation towards the care of the pet.  We will accept money, pet food, cat litter or volunteer hours.

3.  If we are not able to accept your pet we will be happy to list your pet's availablity on our website but you will still be the one caring for the pet.  You basically act as a foster home until we are able to find your pet a home or until we have a space open and can take your pet at the shelter.  You can email us at animalwelfareservices@hotmail.com and provide the following information:

Type of pet

Name

Sex (Neutered or spayed?) (and for cats, declawed 2 or 4?)

Birthday or age

Is the pet friendly with dogs, cats, kids?

How long have you owned the pet and where did you get it?   If you got it from a friend, where did they get it?  In other words, do you know the actual origin of the pet?  We try to learn as much as possible about the pets so we have some ideas about their individual personalities.

Now the important part of listing an animal on the internet is the photo.  To take a great pet photo, get on the pet's level.  Have someone behind you to get the pet's attention.  Send full body and close up photos.  Having a person in the photo is not recommended.  Having clutter in the background is discouraged.  Look at your background.  Is the dog tied to the bumper of a junk car?  Would YOU want to adopt a dog with a photo like that?  Take the dog to a park, tie him to a tree and take photos there.  Is the cat scowling at you in the photo?  Have someone dangle a toy for the cat.  Does your long haired pet need grooming before taking photos?

4.  If you are completely desperate to find a home for your pet, we are full and unable to take it and you need it gone yesterday,  try Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo, PAWS in Charles City, North Iowa Humane Society in Mason City.
